About the Author

Dr. Robert Lee was born in Canton, China. He came to the United States in his teens and earned his BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since graduation, Dr. Lee has worked more than twenty years in middle management in the aerospace industry; he also taught for ten years as a tenured professor at the University of California at Irvine (UCI). He is the author of Optimal Estimation, Identification and Control, a book published by the MIT Press, and he also published numerous technical papers and articles. He holds many patents ranging from the area of recreational vehicles to missiles and aircraft. He was listed in Who’s Who in the West in 1970–1971 (twelfth edition). He is also very active in business. He owned and operated several small business and franchises in his youth. In management, he has served as chairman and CEO of a commuter airline, vice chairman of a national bank, chairman and president of New West Recreation Inc., and the president of Next Generation Business Resources, Inc., which markets advanced speech technologies nationwide and worldwide. He also served as a general partner of several real estate enterprises. He was elected as Entrepreneur of the Year 2004 by the Asian Business Association of Orange County. He is the current chairman of China International University (CIU). He also co-authored two children’s books entitled Selections from 100 Best Children’s Stories from China, Vol. I and II, with his daughter Doreen. The foundation fights Batten disease and also is working to eradicate hundreds of additional, serious and often fatal, inherited, childhood illnesses.

“Date Night with Keith Urban,” at ACL Live at The Moody Theater, will include a full concert performance by Urban, renowned for blockbuster shows, in Austin’s newest and arguably most spectacular music venue. The evening will begin with a “can’t miss” VIP pre-party attended by a who’s who list of guests from Austin, Dallas and Houston and an interactive auction featuring unique items and experiences.

The foundation is offering a variety of event sponsorship packages including some that provide a meet-and-photo opportunity with the superstar and accommodations at the hip W Hotel next to The Moody Theater (ideal for a memorable Valentine’s Day weekend getaway). Craig and Charlotte Benson of Austin started the foundation in 2008 after their then five-year-old daughter, Christiane, was diagnosed with Batten disease, a rare and fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Children born to parents who unknowingly each carry a gene mutation for Batten disease are at risk to inherit the condition which initially causes vision loss and seizures, then progressively impairs cognitive and motor capacities, and ultimately results in death during the late teen years or early 20s. Because Batten disease and so many other similar inherited, childhood diseases are uncommon, there is not much federal funding for research aimed at treatment and prevention.

In its three short years, the foundation has developed the most comprehensive carrier screening test panel for detecting genetic mutations that cause Batten disease and more than 600 other devastating, rare conditions that strike and kill thousands of kids each year. In addition to being so comprehensive, the test will be easy to administer and more economically priced than the cost of an individual test for any one of the diseases on the panel. The scientific and medical communities have heralded the test as a major breakthrough and it has received extensive media and professional journal coverage around the world.

Funds generated by “Date Night” will help the foundation to complete work to bring the test to market in 2012. The foundation plans to use proceeds from sales of the test to become self-sustaining for continuing Batten disease research.

According to foundation-funded research, on average, each person carries three genetic mutations that can cause a severe childhood disease or disorder. Carrier parents can even pass these mutations onto children who do not develop a condition. When these children mature and have kids, their children also are at risk of suffering from one of these conditions. Better-known examples of serious, inherited childhood diseases include Tay-Sachs disease, Cystic Fibrosis and Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA. (One in 40 people are carriers for SMA.) A carrier screening strategy similar to the one that the foundation is developing has been used for Tay-Sachs disease and achieved an impressive 90 percent reduction in the incidence among at-risk populations.

With his latest release Beneath Southland Skies, Mike Brosnan continues to thrive and expand as a songwriter, storyteller and singer. Planned for NZ release in May 2006 on Flying Kiwi Records through Southbound Records (http://www.southbound.co.nz) Beneath Southland Skies brings Brosnan’s eye for lyrical detail and emotive delivery together with a newfound intimacy.

Assembling a small but crack band that included Brosnan on guitars, B3 and vocals, Recky Recky on 2nd guitar, Peter Treusch on drums, Christian Spohn on bass, Georg Schroeder on piano and Marc Breitfelder on harmonica, producer/engineer Reck and Brosnan set out with a mission; to capture the most honest and heartfelt performances they could find.

Recorded live in the studio, “Beneath Southland Skies” was made with minimal overdubs. The vocals were recorded live as the tracks were laid down with an effect of intimacy and immediacy mostly missing from today’s recordings. Lyrically and musically, “Beneath Southland Skies” finds Mike Brosnan with his most personal group of songs yet. Growing up on the outskirts of New Zealand’s capital of Wellington, Brosnan was exposed to a surprising mix of musical influences. His father had a record collection that spanned from Irish ballads to Floyd Cramer and Bill Haley. Combined with that, as well as studying classical piano from an early age, Brosnan developed a extremely broad vision of music in general.

Performing in some of New Zealand’s seminal rock bands, initially as a keyboard player, and then as a guitarist, he brought these diverse influences into contemporary rock music.

Touring for many years on the international blues circuit, his early CD’s were very much in that genre. It was his 1998 release “Streets of Glass” that announced his arrival as a songwriter to be reckoned with. “Streets of Glass” was well received in NZ and Australia, where tracks are still playlisted on mainstream radio. Similarly in the US, where in 2003 it reached as high as #2 on Roots Music Radio without the help of hired radio promotion – a surprise to many in the industry.

2002’s “Wasted Time” displayed even finer skills as a writer and vocalist in a stripped-down, largely acoustic format, and was equally as well received.

“Beneath Southland Skies” is a fitting addition to the Flying Kiwi catalog and features some of Mike Brosnan’s sharpest writing and inspired singing to date.

Highly personal and fiercely honest in it’s delivery the new album is a brave new chapter in an unfolding story.

The Salvation Army USA Southern Territory, DIDMO, creators of the award-winning Magmito mobile application creation solution and GetJar, the world’s largest free app store are pleased to announce that The Salvation Army Daily Cup Social Justice mobile application has been shortlisted as a finalist for The Effective Mobile Marketing Awards in the “Most Effective Mobile Charity Campaign/Solution” category. Sponsored by UpStream, Propel and OpenMarket, the awards will be handed out on November 3, 2011 in London.

The free Daily Cup Social Justice mobile app, which works on all phones, addresses important social justice issues through building awareness and encouraging donations of time and money from mobile consumers. The app features a blog feed, regularly updated with news not commonly found on most other media about donations at work, globally, via The Salvation Army.

The app also highlights important information on social justice including sobering statistics and content on human trafficking, hunger, homelessness, disaster, and HIV/AIDS, to name a few. It also features embedded video. Participation among those who download is encouraged via a feedback form for volunteer inquiries and donation options including a special “Donate $ 10 now” button.

“Our objectives with the app were to inform, educate and engage a global, mobile audience in the fight against social injustices,” said Berenice Kalan, Marketing Director, GetJar. “We accomplished this and exceeded marketing expectations with over 190,000 downloads within the first six weeks and a 6.2% response to “Donate $ 10 now” as well as a 3.9% response to volunteer submissions.”

The Daily Cup Social Justice mobile app was created using DIDMO’s award-winning Magmito platform and was promoted via the GetJar Store.
